The great vzaar video player border debate

Not since Barack Obama faced off against John McCain late last year has a debate been so intense. Well in the vzaar offices that is.
We’ve been debating (heavily) a change to the default player to offer one that is borderless (or what is sometimes known as chromeless)
Currently we have what I think is a really nice clean player with a border that helps it stand out. Our video guy (Ian) thinks the border-less player is a better option as it allows customers to blend it into their own look more easily.
We thought it was best to see what you, are users thought. Take a look at two players below the poll and vote. Feel free to drop us a line or leave some comments if you have any thoughts you would like to share.
We’re just thinking about changing the default player, the one you get automatically. You’ll of course be able to change this either way if you choose to. When we know what you, our users choice is well set this all up correctly.
Of course the free player either way will still have branding on it, and if everyone wants the borderless one we’ll need to figure out how we’ll do the free player branding. But mot importantly, we just want your thoughts on which player type you would prefer.
So have a look below, and give us your vote!

Player 1: Bordered Player (current player)

Player 2: Borderless Player (proposed player)

  1. I agree with Ian. If people want a border, a little bit of CSS will sort it in seconds, while allowing them to match it to what they currently have. The default vzaar look is nice, but it’s very specific – and if your site isn’t all web 2.0 round corners and gradients, I think it’s going to look out of place.

  3. personally i prefer the border, a lot of people will use this site with the intension to put it on ebay like it was designed to do. Putting it on your website is an added extra and i think they should keep focused on their goal which was to supply end users with a video player for ebay listings that looks smart and professions. Which it does, great job guys!

  4. I personally like the border – I think it makes the video more distinct and professional looking.

  5. It should be an option on a video by video basis, it depends on the video content and where I am embedding it.

  6. I agree with John it should be an option when you pick a player for a specific video you can choose to go borderless or not.

  9. I really like the boardered player. It looks more proffesional and attractive. I wouldnt like to have the boarderless player only. I think the option to choose which you use is best.

  10. Your player’s border is very nice. I think, however, as a video production company we would prefer no border. We design our videos to have the intended borders within the piece. A 3rd party border added to the final product interferes with our design. Either way it isn’t a big deal, but ideally we would like to present a pure video without border. Perhaps you can offer the option of one or the other?

  11. Angeline, We’ll definitely be offering both options. The main question is which default is best. I think we’ll probably go with bordered player as a default, but a way of turning it off changing the colours. Adrian

  12. I like them both – each have useful applications. For example, depending on the surrounding background color of a web page, it might help to have a border to offset the video aesthetically. However, most videos don’t need a border. Users may take a bit to get used to the idea, however, since embedded photos are also (usually) borderless, meaning they won’t know that it’s a video unless they actually see the “Play” icon in the middle. That’s my story, and I’m stickin’ to it.

  13. Yes I agree, I think border-less gives more options and will fit better into a site like i’m planning on doing soon. looks odd here but in context i think would make more sense.

  14. borderless is definitely what I would like for my site. But the option to have either would be even better.

  15. Yep, NO border works for me too : it seems like the majority view. Much less “fussy” —-a lot more “natural”. Good luck with the poll :)
