Since we opened up the vzaar video player to allow embedding on multiple website platforms we have seen a really interesting variety of video types emerge from our user base. I thought it might be worth highlighting a five examples that may inspire future video production or shifts in how you utilise video to drive sales, awareness and customer interaction.

1. The Product Demonstration Video
The classic video type that is starting to usurp normal jpeg pictures. Given our eBay roots, we’ve seen lots of businesses shoot videos that focus on describing the item for sale in detail. A seller describing the item’s size, specifications, colour and possible blemishes and the item in working condition (think cars, bikes and industrial equipment!) are obviously the norm but thanks to video the type of product shot on video has now evolved. Whereas before selling a house or rental space might have taken anything between 10-20 pictures, with video its possible to demonstrate every angle, every nook and cranny with a hand held video.

2. The Cross Sell Video
So you’re selling a golf club. Its a lovely Ping and you’re expecting the buyer to shell out £200 for the item. You know he’s going to play golf, you know its only a matter of days before he’s out there on the fairway so why not pitch (pardon the pun!) to him the types of items that every golfer requires? Matching Ping umbrella or glove perhaps? A bag load of tees? Some merchants have therefore run a video for a product then cut in at the end the sheer range of items that they also sell so that the buyer is left tempted by other additional items in or around the point of checkout.

3. The Talking Head Video
The type of video that we are seeing a lot more of recently as people become more and more comfortable with the art of talking to the camera and selling and marketing their service. We’ve had preachers upload their Sunday sermons, lawyers do a piece to camera about their service and upload that to their website and Life Coaches. If you are comfortable with talking to your customers and explaining aspects of your service in detail then this might be the type for you?

4. The Business Profile Video
So you want to impress upon your customer that you are a reputable, trusted seller to do business with. How can you do that without resorting to phoning up each potential customer? Why not take the route that some of our users have and produce your own Business Profile video. Put your team in front of the camera - there is nothing like seeing the person you are buying from for driving trust - or show how professional your premises are so that the buyer is left confident in your ability to deliver the item as described. Some vzaar videos have seen the MD or CEO appear to add that extra air of credibility.

5. The Customer Support Video
Why expect a potential buyer to go through reams of text concerning terms of trade and returns when you can do this in a simple video? We’ve had customers actively seek to reduce the number of questions they get into the customer support queues by tackling with video frequently asked questions such as “How do you pack and ship parcels?” or “How do I return items to you?” It also helps to defuse what could be an awkward customer-seller moment if your customer support representative appear in person in a video to add a friendly disposition to the transaction.

Alternatively, if you are selling an online service try using screencasts to demo your product as this user does.

To eBay has long been a verb. I’ll eBay that later tonight I’ll tell my wife when we are uncluttering the house. The company, to all intents, own the online auctioning moniker and they sweep up quite nicely in most categories from automotive to collectables to antiques and more recently residential property. That’s not to say that dominate in all ecommerce verticals as there is one that is bubbling away quite nicely that I have been using for a year or so now.

Parkatmyhouse.com is the eBay of parking spaces if you get my drift. The site allows users to effectively market their car parking space, garage, forecourt to a market of would be buyers/drivers.

Imagine you are going to see Andy Murray at Wimbledon this summer. The weather is set fair and the strawberries are looking good but you want to drive to SW19. On street parking is a no no and the various car parks in the area will be doing a mean trade at very high prices. So instead you visit Parkatmyhouse to see that there are currently 147 spaces currently available for rent, ranging from daily rates (usually between £5 and £10) to weekly and monthly rates for the longer term visitor or commuter. In theory, if you get in early enough its possible to bag yourself a secure, off street space for your car and enjoy the tennis without worrying about traffic wardens, parking meters or timing restrictions.

The model is easy to extend. I had a Sheffield United fan recently rent my space for the day in Watford as he was heading to Wembley for the football play-offs. He drove down, parked his car, went to the game, came back and drove away. I never saw the guy but made £5. Last week I rented a space for the first time from a charming family who had enough room on their driveway for three cars. That meant that my family could park as close as 10 mins walk to Lords cricket ground, for £10 instead of traveling in by tube which would have been collectively more expensive.

The beauty of the idea is it’s simplicity. Connecting buyers/drivers and sellers/renters. And the site makes this process easy and painless to do. Parkatmyhouse has certainly profited from one of eBay’s weaknesses - its inability to flex its product to the needs of a particular marketplace. By focusing on one niche - the lack of spaces or cost of parking spaces in particular areas - Parkatmyhouse has designed a very smart, functional platform that works incredibly well for both buyer and seller.

After creating an account I listed my parking space within a matter of minutes and because of the site’s use of geo-tagging, you can quickly see who else is “selling their space” in the local area via the onsite Google Maps. That helps you check your daily rate, the quality of your description. Payment can be under your terms (including PayPal) and Parkatmyhouse simply take 15% of every successful rental.

I’ve been using the site now for a year and have rented out my space about 5 different times. Its certainly not enough to build a business around but in these times when we are watching the pennies more than ever, £5-10 in the pocket at the end of the week is very welcome.

Is there anything I’d improve? Well they site experience is pretty slick and they try to make it as easy as possible but I do find that on each booking I have to send some detailed instructions on the space and how to find it etc. It would be nice if I could save these as templates. Also, and I would say this, adding video would be fun. That way I could really show the renter the space in detail as I think its pretty easy to over sell the space as being better than it really is. They allow for photos so I expect video to simply be the next iteration on this.

All in all though an impressive service and one that is probably very welcome in today’s climate. Like eBay, it has the power to make entrepreneurs (parking attendants) of us all!

Hello again all you vzaar readers, it’s Sami the spring intern at vzaar. I posted an article on the blog last month, talking about how vzaar had started to develop Adwords and SEO Marketing campaigns. This week I’m looking forward to share some more insight with you by suggesting a few useful tips for those of you who are interested in developing an Adwords strategy for advertising your business online.

(Yes we bought it!)

Be Specific, Stay Focused
First of all I must say it is important for you to be relevant in your marketing strategy ensuring you focus on exactly the product or service you are selling. Providing mixed Google adverts by amalgamating your offers and messages or being too general will ultimately cost you as you’ll generate a lot of clicks from a wide audience. Know your buying audience and pitch to them as if you would face to face. That’s why it may be preferable to stay focused on your niche and the people you usually target. Google mainly rewards relevancy - keep this in mind!

Know Your Keywords
Try to use specific and targeted keywords specific to your business: this is the key to relevancy. Remain as precise as possible in the words you think your customers will use and explore all the combination’s you can think of. Of course some keywords will be more useful than others but you never know when which one will be used and meanwhile keeping some on standby won’t cost you much. Try to think like a buyer. What would they search for. You really have to enter into people’s internet searching habits to guess which keywords and which ads are more likely to getting click-throughs.

Remember you can also choose which negative keywords you don’t want your adverts to be associated with. This helps you avoid a lot of impressions on irrelevant search terms that could easily be eating up your budget.

Ad Design - Look Sharp
When building your adverts be sure to test at least three to four at a time. Google will help display the best performing ad over time which helps. Be sure to emphasize in the ad the keywords associated with the search the buyer has performed. Pick an attractive URL and landing page for the buyer to land on and don’t be afraid to test lots of different variations, themes and styles. Don’t waste characters on unnecessary words or confusing text.

Needless to say study your competitors by watching their ads but be sure not to fall foul of Google’s Adtext policies when it come to punctuation and brand names.

Tools Of The Trade
There are so many tools and resources out there for you to use! Its brilliant. Turn to these as much tools as possible to understand the results and develop your campaigns:

Google Adwords has it’s own blog with plenty of free useful webinars you can sign up to.

Google Learning Centre is your one stop shop for all things Adwords

Conversion Optimizer - make sure you are tracking and measuring your performance against ROI.

Google Analytics helps you analyse the activity of those that are clicking on your ads.

Keyword Tool - helps you generate lists of keywords based on or around words you associate with your business or product. Great for tackling the longer tail of searches out there.

Watch The Budget
Your hard earned money can disappear very quickly on Adwords if not properly managed. I set an initial daily budget which helps me manage spend and Google ensures that I do not exceed that. When starting don’t go for broke as you’re better off delivering regular performances and results over time, which you can then download and interpret in your own time, instead of trying to dominate from day one. Then when you have learned what works and what doesn’t you can start to optimize your campaigns and perhaps increase your budget or what you are prepared to pay for a click.

Knowing what you are prepared to pay for a lead, sale or conversion is very important as this will not only define your daily budget but help you understand if your money and time on Adwords is being spent well. There are tools to help you make the most of this by tracking all clicks you generate. Be sure to turn these on.

Patience
When you’re in charge of advertising on Adwords, you can’t afford to let your campaigns run on auto-pilot. You need to provide constant surveillance and reporting on the costs and conversions your work is generating. Sometimes, testing new campaigns or changes in your strategy will require a bit of time before you are able to make the right conclusions. I have been running our strategy for three months now and there is still plenty for me to learn on a daily basis. Plenty of things to tweak. Plenty of ads to retest and rerun. Be patient and don’t forget to monitor and keep a fresh track of every modifications you make to your Adwords campaign.

Next Friday June 4th, Video Guy and myself will be joining a number of other businesses at the first Start To Sell Online seminar in Reading, Berkshire. The event is aimed at introducing traditional businesses to the world of selling online or for those who are already online but want to expand their operations.

vzaar are down on the agenda to talk about rich media and in particular how video can hep you sell online. Best to stick to what we know eh?!

What I really like is that after a 10 minutes Dragons Den style pitch, we get to meet each of the local businesses attending in what has been billed as a speed dating meets round table discussions. Should be interesting.

Other speakers include eBay, Royal Mail and Lloyds Banking Group and the whole event has been put together by the good man Chris Dawson of Tamebay fame and his cohort John Pemberton of Give Me Designer Clothes.

You may have seen this site recently on how to use twitter for marketing and PR.

At vzaar we have been finding Twitter rather useful for marketing and some minor PR. Jamie (‘business guy’ on the blog), takes a bit of time each day to respond to people looking for video solutions and communicate with them. Sometimes this is one way, but it can also become the opening to a conversation which is the best way to find new users. Conversation, not broadcasting.

I’ve also noticed a lot more people following our @vzaar twitter feed in the sales space (i.e. online selling of something). What I find interesting is the average follower count of these people is normally in the 1K-10K range.

I find this curious. On my personal feed I tend to block most (not all) followers like this. I don’t want someone following me to boost my follow count, or because they expect me to follow them back. I want people following me who either actually know me, or want to follow me because they find me interesting. I would say I have probably an 80% hit rate of genuine followers out of my 250ish followers. On our work account I would say this hit rate is probably more like 20% out of the 200ish followers we have there.

But then in fairness, we follow 206 people, and we don’t read the stream of people we follow. We read the search stream and we follow our own personal streams, but we don’t follow the stream of who we follow, as we’re all just too busy, so we’re equally as bad.

I would love to reduce our work twitter stream to people we actually follow and read, but we all follow them on our personal accounts anyway. I think Twitter is splitting into two groups. Those who use them for personal conversations, and those who use them for work and/or to amass followers.

I think there is much more value in real links than the empty links you get when it’s a game and the winner is how many followers you get.

The coffee shop and restaurant above our office, just started a twitter feed. @thepantrylondon only has 14 followers. But all of those followers are valuable as they are all people who live or work nearby. I would rather have 14 valued followers than 10000 empty ones.

They don’t have to be the most followed coffee shop in the world. What they need is people who might by coffee from them, to have an interaction with them when they are not in the shop.

That’s how you use Twitter for PR and marketing.

Hi all you vzaar readers, I’m Sami, the spring intern at vzaar. I come from France, where I’m studying Business & Management, and look forward to graduating in the field of marketing in 2010. My interest in sales, communication and new technologies made me choose coming to vzaar in order to experience a new form of online advertising; namely Search Engine Marketing (or Google Adwords if we are being more honest!).

When I first arrived at vzaar, I had very little knowledge of Adwords and I was wondering how I was going to be able to attract to the site new customers with no adverts on the radio, billboards or other forms of conventional media used for advertising. As I started to get familiar with the concept of bidding on keywords, writing new ads and managing a budget I quickly came to realize the amazing opportunity that Google offers businesses who want to compete at a global level.

Whilst Google Search appears to be simple and intuitive to use, Adwords seems a bit complicated when you first dip into it. It took me a fair share of time reading books, watching tutorials, attending webinars and some expert best practice sharing from the good guys at Swoopo, before I really get started but today I can say that I don’t regret it all and neither would you if you do ever decide to work with Adwords.

The apparent complexity comes from the sheer amount of possibilities I was offered from within the Adwords interface. Nevertheless the control on online advertising seems a lot more flexible and successful than any other form of communication based across the mass-media.

The main and most important thing I learnt is how to attract numerous visitors towards a specific website with a minimum budget in place. Whereas before I wasn’t familiar with the real detail of online advertising, I often used to ignore sponsored links and associate them with pop ups, banners or other modes of spam. In reality they represent a real chance for all e-commerce merchants to get significant more exposure on the web and change their visitors into targeted prospects whilst only paying when a user clicks on one of your ads.

On a daily basis I work towards acquiring always more users and converting them into paying customers through targeted ad campaigns. These ads are inspired by a very detailed list of keywords which we know people use to find our service. One thing I had to my advantage was that I didn’t have to start advertising from scratch as there were already a few campaigns that has been launched by the vzaar team and I must say that’s what helped me as I could observe and analyze what had gone before.

When I started, just 6 campaigns were launched and each had their own ad groups targeting specific themes and keywords we felt were relevant to the video product we are trying to sell. I had the chance to develop and manage more of them during my internship and I had a lot of autonomy in my work, leaving me free to do any changes I wanted as long as I could justify them. The beauty with adwords is that statistically its very easy, after a few thousand impressions, to see what works and what is doesn’t. I picked up Adwords on March 1st and you can see how over time our numnber of daily new users grew.

But the period in which we had the most people signing up was around late March and new users peaked on April 1st. This proved to be an April Fools of the acquisition kind though as we then realized that a lot of users from Asia and India were signing up for free without demonstrating any intent on uploading video. Adwords lets you target specific geographies so it was very easy to simply stop targeting Asia for a while and see if we could develop some better quality, local customers. As a result the volume of daily conversions fell but over time the quality of them improved. We’d take quality over quantity any day!

In the next two months before my internship ends, I am focusing on how to optimize our existing campaigns day by day and ensure that our performance sticks to the budget as close as possible. Adwords is an ongoing science that requires daily attention. I’m also researching new opportunities for vzaar by finding new businesses to target. I look forward to sharing some more insight before I leave.

Although there has been much hype published on the internet on the merits of online video for commerce, there is little actual data to back it up. It’s a difficult task to report actual conversions rates using video versus not using video, as larger companies guard this type of data and are not willing to share.

We therefore decided to take on the task, and report on how a few small businesses that use online product videos were getting on. (The full report can be downloaded at the bottom of this post)

It is often the case in challenging economic conditions, such as these, the small business that usually falls. Not so for these four companies, who were kind enough to share with me some data and experiences, which provide some insight into how their businesses are responding to the addition of online video to their web stores.

Equip2clean, one of these companies, who started using video after being urged by eBay and Google keynote speeches at various trade shows, reported its best month of trading in February 2009, and attributes its success to the product videos they create.

Jonathan Paxton, the owner of this commercial cleaning equipment company comments.
“Our eBay sales immediately doubled on the products we listed video with. Our Big advantage is that most of our cleaning products sell well on video - we actually show them in use cleaning - we don’t talk too much about technical specification - we just let the customer see what it can do.”

Another company in the study, Diamond Jewellery United based in Antwerp Belgium, saw their sales increase by 65% four months after implementing product videos.

“Nearly all major websites only place a picture of a model, therefore leaving the buyer not sure what they are getting until they actually receive the diamond, and therefore resulting in a average of 30% returns amongst online jewellers. We have found that our videos give the customers a good idea of what they will be getting and thus our return rates are about 12%.” says Stephen Grunhut, the companies managing director.

Two other business in the study, Industry Recycles who sell second hand equipment, saw an increase in sales over 12 months by over 307%, and Yesil, an online furniture website, saw a 50% increase in web traffic transferring to a rise of 30% in sales over the same period.

If you have any results you would like to share please do. We would like to hear them. We are also keen to hear of any challenges you faced with video production and what you did to overcome them as Stephen Grunhut has done in the report.

Since we launched we've had a number of requests asking for details on our Affiliate Programme. I suspect that most publishers, especially in the eBay sphere, expect all applications to offer such an incentive programme. Up until now we didn't.

So with the minimum of fanfare we'd like to tell you about our vzaar Affiliate Programme that we will be trialing from today. We are looking for a handful of publishers to invite into the programme which will initially last 90 days at which point the scheme will be reviewed.

For the launch we intend to keep things quite simple. Here are some of the main points:

Publisher fees available from $3 to $200 per user depending on package signed up to

Payments to be made via PayPal

Buttons to be made available to publisher on acceptance into the programme

If the chance to earn some extra revenues appeals and you regularly attract the type of business or eBay seller we're looking for then please email me with your name and vzaar user name and I'll be in touch with further details.

Small change, small price. When we make any changes to our product no matter how big or how small we give it much thought and consideration. Often there is a split in the team and it usually becomes a huge debate that can last days or even weeks. One thing that is never debated is our objective and that is providing a service that offers remarkable value. The challenge we faced with this change is balancing the offer of our current Free package with our bottom line. Yes I am afraid in the end it all comes down to dollars and sense. So after much debate and thought we have made a change that we feel still meets our objective and makes sense.

Today we are announcing a new package called Lite. It costs $5.00 a month and you get 2GB of video bandwidth for that and access to the video privacy feature and multi size players.

For those familiar with vzaar you will say that this is more of a shift in products and you would be right. We have essentially created a new product by reducing the monthly video bandwidth for Free users from 2GB to 1GB and created a new package to fit the gap between 1GB and 2GB.

Here is the reason why we did this. No fluff just the facts pure and simple. When we first created the Free package we had no real user activity data to go by so it was created by making assumptions on what we thought the average user would use. The only real basis was the model; we wanted to offer a Freemimum structure so users could use a free service as a opposed to a free trial of a service that lasted 30 days. Our Free service is forever, as long as you stay within your monthly 1GB allowance.(and we don’t go changing it again, we won’t I promise). We now have real data based on users activity and usage and the data tells us that 2GB is too much to give away for Free. We are committed to offering great value and we fell all our packakages offer great value. The player plays no adverts, has no links at the end, just your content. We hope you feel the same way.

So that’s the reason why we have made this change. We do hope that you will continue to use our service. As usual we are happy to talk or email so please get in touch or comment below.

Last year we needed some extra development, and started looking for resources. We had no intention of looking outside the UK, although an outsourcer in China had contacted us so we thought we would follow up with them, and see if it was a possibility.

The Chinese outsourcer was very quick to get back to us. We set them some development tasks to do and sent it off.

We then posted a few job postings for developers on some of the jobs boards. Gumtree because it was cheap, and a few of the free rails boards.

And boy did the onset of emails begin. About 50 mails from individuals, outsources (USA, China and India mainly) and recruiters. I quickly developed a filter system of Yes/No/Maybe and started cutting down the mails. It soon started taking over my life.

Fortunately a small company based out in Cracow (or is that Kraków) with a affection for muffin logos dropped us a mail. We sent off the same home work task and got on with filtering the emails.

Applicake completed the homework within a day or two, and impressed our in house developer. A few skype chats and a phone call later we took them on as our development team.

2 Weeks later the Chinese outsourcer replied to us.

Our in house developer decided to move onto some work of a different technical nature leaving Applicake as our primary development team, and if I said we were happy with their work, I’d be lying.

We’re ecstatic with their work.

Technically they are fantastic, and we’re really glad we have such a great team working with us.

But as anyone in project management and technology will tell you, there’s lots of good developers out. A good team is more than their technical skills. And Applicake is aces.

Here’s an example. Every Tuesday they break early (where early is 6pm) and the whole office goes to a group Business English class. This says a lot to me as a client. It says they are dedicated, they focus on improvement, and they want to serve their clients better.

I’ve never met such a hard working team who act as if they are part of the company, not as a vendor. The amount of times they have worked late hours, or weekends, or helped out in a emergency are too numerous to mention, and again shows we made the right decision in picking this fantastic company.

I was lucky enough to meet all four founders, (3 of whom I work with) Pawel, Agata, Ela and Bart in the last few weeks as they were all in London. Agata and Pawel even worked from our offices for a few days of a big release which was great. A nice group of people you couldn’t meet.

Applicake have just release their own product in the web space called Pipejump which is online sale software. If you make deals or sell stuff, you’ll want to check this product out.

Other than I can only say

Dzięki Applicake, jesteś fantastyczny zespół. Czekamy na długi związek z wami chłopaki.

We were invited to be part of a larger discussion on the theme of Turning Browsers Into Buyers. A great theme given that the room was largely full of vendors looking to optimise their sales and marketing tactics in what is a ever increasingly busy and competitive space.

David Monterroso of RichFX

The video runs some 50 minutes but as a group we cover a number of themes including new technologies and services that can help increase your conversion rates, thoughts on what turns buyers when purchasing online as well as time for a question and answer session from the audience.
