Since we opened up the vzaar video player to allow embedding on multiple website platforms we have seen a really interesting variety of video types emerge from our user base. I thought it might be worth highlighting a five examples that may inspire future video production or shifts in how you utilise video to drive sales, awareness and customer interaction.

1. The Product Demonstration Video
The classic video type that is starting to usurp normal jpeg pictures. Given our eBay roots, we’ve seen lots of businesses shoot videos that focus on describing the item for sale in detail. A seller describing the item’s size, specifications, colour and possible blemishes and the item in working condition (think cars, bikes and industrial equipment!) are obviously the norm but thanks to video the type of product shot on video has now evolved. Whereas before selling a house or rental space might have taken anything between 10-20 pictures, with video its possible to demonstrate every angle, every nook and cranny with a hand held video.

2. The Cross Sell Video
So you’re selling a golf club. Its a lovely Ping and you’re expecting the buyer to shell out £200 for the item. You know he’s going to play golf, you know its only a matter of days before he’s out there on the fairway so why not pitch (pardon the pun!) to him the types of items that every golfer requires? Matching Ping umbrella or glove perhaps? A bag load of tees? Some merchants have therefore run a video for a product then cut in at the end the sheer range of items that they also sell so that the buyer is left tempted by other additional items in or around the point of checkout.

3. The Talking Head Video
The type of video that we are seeing a lot more of recently as people become more and more comfortable with the art of talking to the camera and selling and marketing their service. We’ve had preachers upload their Sunday sermons, lawyers do a piece to camera about their service and upload that to their website and Life Coaches. If you are comfortable with talking to your customers and explaining aspects of your service in detail then this might be the type for you?

4. The Business Profile Video
So you want to impress upon your customer that you are a reputable, trusted seller to do business with. How can you do that without resorting to phoning up each potential customer? Why not take the route that some of our users have and produce your own Business Profile video. Put your team in front of the camera - there is nothing like seeing the person you are buying from for driving trust - or show how professional your premises are so that the buyer is left confident in your ability to deliver the item as described. Some vzaar videos have seen the MD or CEO appear to add that extra air of credibility.

5. The Customer Support Video
Why expect a potential buyer to go through reams of text concerning terms of trade and returns when you can do this in a simple video? We’ve had customers actively seek to reduce the number of questions they get into the customer support queues by tackling with video frequently asked questions such as “How do you pack and ship parcels?” or “How do I return items to you?” It also helps to defuse what could be an awkward customer-seller moment if your customer support representative appear in person in a video to add a friendly disposition to the transaction.

Alternatively, if you are selling an online service try using screencasts to demo your product as this user does.

VideoRetailer.org - Exploring the Intersection of Video and e-Commerce.

When videos are created with the simple and noble goal to honestly explain, demonstrate or showcase a product, not only can they be used as a conversion machine on product pages, but also as a powerful lead generation tool outside of an e-commerce site. The content is the ad, the ad the content. The Ad is the Content, videoretailer.org

Just what we keep saying. This is why we don’t run adverts over our videos at vzaar. It’s because the video is the advert. We want to support you by creating the best video service around so you can showcase your products. Not so we can make money by showing someone else’s products on top of yours.

The ad is the content. Your content is the ad.

Last month vzaar appeared as part of a panel at the ChannelAdvisor Catalyst event for eBay and online merchants and retailers. We were invited to be part of a larger discussion on the theme of Turning Browsers Into Buyers. A great theme given that the room was largely full of vendors looking to optimise their sales and marketing tactics in what is a ever increasingly busy and competitive space.

Joining me on the panel, which was chaired by Michael Jones of ChannelAdvisor, were

The video runs some 50 minutes but as a group we cover a number of themes including new technologies and services that can help increase your conversion rates, thoughts on what turns buyers when purchasing online as well as time for a question and answer session from the audience.

Hi all. I am vzaar’s design dude. This is my first blog post here so I thought about making it very relevant to your needs and write a bit about video (if you are reading this I assume you have an interest in video). I am not going to talk about the business implications of it. Jamie our Business Man frequently writes great posts on this.

This post is a reflection of what I have learned over the years about video and my experiences with it. Put simply…I am writing what’s in my head, so this is not intended to be a definitive guide but more of a sharing experience type of thing. Hopefully it will add some value to your video knowledge and be fun along the way!

Being a designer, both online and print, I deal a lot with visual communication. Video is the ultimate visual communication tool (if I can call it this way) at your disposal. Get your message across effectively. Think about it before you actually produce your video and it will make wanders to your final product.

No amount of video software trickery will compensate for bad quality footage. No, I do not mean picture quality but content quality. Granted, picture quality is important but content is far more. Ultimately that’s what video is about.

This post discusses what you should think about before picking up the camera, during filming and after (editing), and also what vzaar can do for you along the process.

This post is divided in four parts:

1. Video hardware and software background - the evolution

Some background on video hardware and software and my early experiences with it. I find it fascinating how much technology has changed. 10 years ago you would have to be very patient to get video done on a computer indeed…

2. The video tech bit - no need to be a video tech to know the tech

Nowadays your video camera will talk happily with your computer, but knowing a few things will help you tremendously, like that small video setting you needed to choose on your computer the other day and did not know.

3. Planning your video - getting it right in your head first

Scripting, camera shots and angles, audio, lightning.

4. Editing your masterpiece - making it to the point

Professionals call video editing post-production but this really is about reducing your footage to a digestible piece, which are both interesting to watch and gets the message across. Bang! You’ve done it!

Next week: Video hardware and software background - the evolution

It has been a while but with the changes to our site in the last few months we’re pleased to share with you our new and fresh video tutorials that should make things even easier for you if you are new to vzaar. They cover

  • Setting up a free vzaar account
  • Uploading a video and Adding your video to eBay
  • Uploading a video and Embedding it on your own website

The rather lovely and ultra efficient Emily at AskM did these for us and very pleased with them we are too!

Adding your Video to eBay (2m 40s)

Embedding a video on your own website (2m 16s)

We are pretty proud of how easy it is to add video to your eBay listings. In a few clicks it is possible via the vzaar platform to insert one video into hundreds of eBay listings. Nice and easy.

However, we know that many of you sellers like to use Turbo Lister for your listings so that you can control the look and feel of the advert. In cases where perhaps you use the same video time and time again or want to place the video placement code in just the right spot then you might like our step by step Turbo Lister guide?

1. Log into Turbo Lister

2. Select New Item

3. Click on Description Builder

4. Select HTML View

5. Paste in the vzaar video code
Remember you can get the code for any individual video from the My vzaar Videos page or simply use the placement code here

6. Click on Set Default Description in left hand column and select YES

7. Select Save

When you create new items in the future the video code will already be included for you in your Turbo Lister template. You then just need to enter all the other listing information (title, price, start date etc) as per normal.

Let us know how you get on!

There's something for everyone on vzaar this week.

This great video shows off this macho pressure washer brilliantly.

This video, just a few secons long, shows off this exquisite ring better than a hundred pictures.

It's impossible not to love Tickle Me Elmo.

Top Tips Vid

Good day, All. The savvy ones amongst you will have noticed that we have changed the home page "How to" to the vzaar "Top 5 tips".

We did this because in these early days of video we noticed there were some obvious ways which many of you could improve your videos to really get the most out of your sales. The most obvious one of which was talking. Interestingly a lot of you are really shy about speaking on camera.

Also when it comes to selling things that can really benefit from video - things that you can show working, we found that some of you often didn't. Pianos would be un-played, toys would be un-moved and engines would remain cold. We do think your videos show off all your items well, but given that a video is an opportunity to show how something moves, how it sounds, what it does, that it works - giving you a chance to really show it off - it seems that many people don't consider making their video more "active".

We hope you find our top tips really helpful. Dan and I really enjoyed making it and have grand plans to do lots more. (Secretly getting the chance to fulfill my dream of bursting onto the silver screen...)
